Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Pandas & Ancient Streets

Early start for the pandas, then afternoon exploring Chengdu's history and culture.

  • 7:00 AM: Depart from your hotel. We time this early because pandas are most active during their morning feeding — after that, they nap.
  • 7:30 - 10:30 AM: Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Your guide explains:
    • Panda conservation: from 1,800 in the wild to 2,000+ today
    • Breeding programs and reintroduction efforts
    • What pandas actually eat (it's not just bamboo)
    • The adorable and clumsy breeding challenges
  • 11:00 AM: Visit the Panda Post Office to send postcards with panda stamps — a unique souvenir.
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch at a local restaurant in the Panda Base area. Try "Bashu" (Sichuan) cuisine.
  • 2:00 PM: Visit Jinli Street (锦里). This restored ancient street showcases old Chengdu:
    • Traditional shop architecture
    • Street food tasting:糖油果子, 三大炮, 凉粉
    • Traditional crafts: papercutting, face changing masks
    • Wenshu Monastery adjacent (active Buddhist temple)
  • 5:00 PM: Return to hotel to freshen up.
  • 7:00 PM: Traditional Hotpot Dinner. This is not the tourist hotpot chains you've heard of. This is a local establishment where Chengdu people actually eat:
    • The debate: which broth is better (red vs. white)
    • What to dip, how long to cook each ingredient
    • The social ritual: sharing food, drinking beer, talking
    • Your guide shows you the best dipping sauces
2

Sichuan Culture & Cuisine

Today immerses you in Sichuan culture — from tea houses to street food to the famous opera.

  • 9:00 AM: Visit a traditional Chengdu Tea House. This isn't about the tea — it's about the experience:
    • Watch ear cleaning performed on customers
    • See foot massages given while people sip tea
    • Observe locals playing mahjong and Chinese chess
    • Learn the etiquette of Chinese tea ceremony
  • 11:30 AM: Walking food tour through the Kuanzhai Alley area:
    • Mapo tofu at the restaurant where it was invented
    • Dan dan noodles — the street food that became a global phenomenon
    • Chengdu-style dumplings (抄手) in red oil or clear soup
    • Advice on what's actually spicy vs. what's manageable
  • 1:30 PM: Lunch — you'll have worked up an appetite. Your guide introduces more dishes.
  • 3:00 PM: Visit the Wenshu Monastery (文殊院) — Chengdu's most important Buddhist temple and a center of Chengdu culture.
  • 5:00 PM: Rest at your hotel.
  • 7:30 PM: Shu Feng Yue (Facing the Sea) Opera. Experience the famous "face changing" (变脸) show — a centuries-old theatrical technique where actors change masks instantaneously. Your guide explains the artistry and meaning behind each style.
  • 9:30 PM: Late-night snack at a night market. Try 兔头 (rabbit head) if you're brave, or stick with grilled skewers and cold beer. Chengdu nights are for eating.
3

City Center & Departure

Final day exploring Chengdu's urban heart and ensuring smooth departure.

  • 8:30 AM: Visit Renmin Park (人民公园) — the living room of Chengdu:
    • Watch tai chi practitioners in the morning
    • See people dancing in the square
    • Experience the matchmaking corner (parents seeking spouses for their children)
    • Have a casual tea in the park
  • 10:00 AM: Walk through the Tianfu Square area — the symbolic center of Chengdu, with its giant Mao statue and modern city planning.
  • 11:00 AM: Visit the Chengdu Museum or the Sichuan Science & Technology Museum (depending on your interests).
  • 12:30 PM: Farewell lunch at a beloved local restaurant — not a tourist place.
  • 2:00 PM: If time permits, a final visit to a local market for cooking ingredients or souvenirs.
  • 3:00 PM: Tour concludes. Your guide can assist with transportation to the airport, train station, or your next destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, we've got you covered. Sichuan food is famous for its spice, but it's also about flavor layers beyond heat. We can adjust every dish to your spice tolerance — from "mild" to "authentically spicy." For hotpot, restaurants offer "half and half" pots (一半一半) with one spicy and one mild broth. Your guide will teach you the magic of numbing pepper (花椒) which adds flavor without pure heat. Most visitors who thought they couldn't handle Sichuan food end up loving it.

The Chengdu Panda Base is a legitimate conservation and research institution, not a petting zoo. Pandas bred here have been successfully reintroduced to the wild. The center: contributes to breeding programs, conducts vital research, educates the public, and has helped bring pandas from "endangered" to "vulnerable." We support ethical wildlife tourism and can also arrange visits to rehabilitation centers if you have specific concerns.

You can visit Bifengxia Panda Base (2 hours away) which has a more mountainous setting and sometimes allows viewing of younger pandas. There's also the option of the Dujiangyan Panda Center which occasionally offers volunteer programs. We can adjust Day 1 to include these alternatives if pandas are your main priority.

Absolutely. The face-changing show is spectacular, but not for everyone. If you'd rather have more free time, skip the opera, or replace it with something else (a cooking class, more market time, etc.), just let us know when booking. We're flexible.

Very. The city center is quite flat and walkable. The main tourist areas (Jinli, Kuanzhai Alley, Renmin Park) are all within a few kilometers of each other. We use metro and taxis for longer distances. The city is also very bike-friendly if you want to cycle.
