Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about traveling in Guangzhou

Absolutely. Guangzhou offers an accessible introduction to China with excellent infrastructure, English signage at major tourist spots, and a cosmopolitan atmosphere. The Canton Fair makes it especially well-prepared for international visitors. However, knowing a few basic Mandarin phrases or having a local guide helps significantly.

We recommend 3-4 days to cover the highlights: temples, Shamian Island, Canton Tower area, and at least one full food adventure. If attending the Canton Fair, add an extra day for each fair day you plan to attend.

In tourist areas, hotels, and the Canton Fair complex, English is commonly understood. However, in local neighborhoods, restaurants, and markets, English is limited. Downloading a translation app like Pleco or Google Translate is highly recommended.

Cantonese cuisine is legendary for its freshness, subtle flavors, and variety. Dim sum alone offers dozens of options. Vegetarians will find good choices too, though you may need to communicate clearly about no meat or fish sauce. Dedicated vegetarian restaurants exist but require research.

The fastest option is the high-speed rail (60-75 minutes, about $25-35) from Hong Kong West Kowloon Station directly to Guangzhou South or East stations. You can also take the港珠澳大桥 shuttle bus (2 hours) or cross via Shenzhen on the Metro. For fair attendees, dedicated shuttle buses are often available.
