Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

The Warriors & Ancient Tombs

Today is dedicated to Emperor Qin Shi Huang and the army that has guarded his tomb for 2,000 years. We'll also visit the less-visited but equally fascinating Han Yang Ling tomb.

  • 7:30 AM: Depart early from your hotel to beat the crowds at the Terracotta Warriors.
  • 8:00 - 10:30 AM: Terracotta Warriors Museum. This is not a "walk through, take photos" experience. Your historian guide explains:
    • How peasant farmers discovered the army in 1974
    • The engineering marvels of the Qin Dynasty
    • Theories about the unfinished tomb nearby
    • Why each warrior is unique and what they reveal about Qin society
    • Recent archaeological discoveries and ongoing excavations
  • 11:00 AM: Visit a local craft workshop where you can see artists hand-making miniature warrior replicas using traditional techniques.
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch at a restaurant in Lintong District, famous for its sword (佩刀) noodles and local specialties.
  • 2:00 PM: Han Yang Ling (汉阳陵). This is Emperor Liu Qi (Han Wudi's son) and features a remarkable underground museum where you walk on glass floors over excavation pits. Much fewer tourists than the Terracotta Warriors.
  • 4:30 PM: Return to the city. Rest or explore your hotel neighborhood.
  • 7:00 PM: Evening food walk in the Muslim Quarter. Try: lamb skewers, roujiamo (Chinese hamburger), cold noodles, persimmon cake, and rice wine. Your guide introduces the Hui Muslim community's unique food culture.
2

Ancient Walls & City Center

Today explores the living heart of Xi'an — the city within the walls. We'll cycle the walls, visit the bell and drum towers, and discover the layers of history beneath modern Xi'an.

  • 8:30 AM: Meet at the South Gate (永宁门) to rent bikes. Cycling the complete 14km wall circuit takes about 2 hours, or you can cycle sections and walk others.
  • 8:30 - 11:00 AM: City Wall Cycling. Your guide shares stories of the wall's construction (1370 Ming Dynasty), its role in city defense, and how Xi'an was once the world's largest city. Stop at watchtowers for photos and city views.
  • 11:30 AM: Descend at the West Gate and visit the Xi'an City Wall Museum (small entrance fee, optional).
  • 12:30 PM: Lunch in the Beiyuanmen area — traditional courtyard restaurants serving Shaanxi cuisine. Try: yang rou pao mo (lamb soup with bread), liangpi (cold skin noodles), and zhong (steamed buns).
  • 2:00 PM: Visit the Bell Tower (钟楼) and Drum Tower (鼓楼) — the symbolic center of ancient Chang'an. Climb for panoramic views and see the original Ming Dynasty bell and drums.
  • 3:30 PM: Walking tour through the old city streets, visiting local temples and the Great Mosque area (notable for its blend of Chinese and Islamic architecture).
  • 5:30 PM: Rest and freshen up.
  • 7:00 PM: Dinner at De Fa Chang — one of Xi'an's oldest and most famous noodle restaurants. Watch chefs hand-pull biang biang面 and learn the story behind this iconic dish.
3

Tang Dynasty & Departure

Your final day connects the Tang Dynasty — Xi'an's golden age — with practical departure needs. We'll visit Tang Dynasty sites and ensure your onward journey is smooth.

  • 8:30 AM: Visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (大雁塔). Built in 652 AD, this Tang Dynasty icon preserved Buddhist scriptures brought from India. Your guide explains the Silk Road's role in bringing Buddhism to China and the cultural exchange between East and West.
  • 10:00 AM: Explore the surrounding Da Ci'en Temple area and the modern Tang Dynasty cultural district.
  • 11:30 AM: Visit the Shaanxi History Museum. This world-class museum houses artifacts from prehistoric times through the Tang Dynasty. Your guide provides context and highlights the must-see pieces — it's overwhelming without guidance.
  • 1:30 PM: Farewell lunch at a local favorite — a small restaurant where Xi'an locals actually eat, not a tourist establishment.
  • 3:00 PM: If time allows, visit the Tang Dynasty West Market — a modern reconstruction of the famous market that once served as the world's trade hub. Or explore the modern shopping district around Wangfujing.
  • 5:00 PM: Tour concludes. Your guide can assist with transportation to the train station, airport, or your next destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Absolutely. It consistently ranks as the most popular tourist attraction in China for good reason. The scale (8,000+ soldiers), the history (2,200 years old), and the engineering (each soldier unique) make it genuinely awe-inspiring. With a knowledgeable guide who can explain the context, it's a transformative experience. Without one, it's just a big pit with statues.

Extremely. The Terracotta Warriors receives 10,000+ visitors daily during peak season. We time our visits strategically: arriving at opening time and leaving before 11 AM avoids the worst crowds. Your guide also knows the best angles and quieter viewing spots within the complex.

Absolutely. The cycling is optional. You can: walk sections of the wall, take a golf cart tour, or skip the wall entirely and spend that time exploring the city center more deeply. Just let us know your preferences when booking.

Shaanxi cuisine is actually quite vegetarian-friendly! Cold noodles (liangpi), vegetables in various preparations, and some temple foods are naturally vegetarian or easily made so. Xi'an also has some excellent Buddhist vegetarian restaurants. We'll accommodate your dietary needs throughout the tour.

Yes! Popular extensions include: the华山 mountains (1-2 days, stunning hikes), Huaqing Hot Springs, the Hukou Waterfall, or combining with Luoyang (Longmen Grottoes). We can also extend your time in Xi'an itself for a deeper experience of the food, museums, or specific sites that interest you.
