Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Tianmen Mountain Ascent

Ascend Tianmen Mountain on the world's longest cable car — a dramatic 7.5km journey from valley floor to summit.

  • 9:00 AM: Meet your guide at Tianmen Mountain cable car station. The cable car to the summit covers 7,455 meters and takes about 30 minutes.
  • 9:00-10:00 AM: Cable car ascent. As you climb, the views expand dramatically — from city streets to mountainside villages to clouds and peaks. The final ascent is nearly vertical, passing under the natural arch of Tianmen Cave.
  • 10:30 AM: Arrive at the summit (1,518 meters). Visit Tianmen Cave, a natural rock arch that inspired the name "Heaven's Gate." Climb the 999 steps (or take the escalator) to the cave's entrance.
  • 12:00 PM: Lunch at a summit restaurant.
  • 2:00-5:00 PM: Walk the Glass Skywalk, a cantilevered glass walkway suspended over a sheer drop. The experience of walking on air with nothing between you and the valley floor 1,300 meters below is unforgettable.
  • 7:00 PM: Dinner at a hotel on the mountain. The sunset views from the summit are spectacular.
2

99-Bend Road & Guigu Path

Experience Tianmen Mountain's most dramatic features — the hairpin road and cliffside path.

  • 9:00 AM: Walk the 99-Bend Road observation deck. From here, see the 99 hairpin turns climbing Tianmen Mountain — one of the world's most spectacular mountain roads.
  • 10:30 AM: Visit Tianmen Temple, a Buddhist temple built into the mountainside. The temple has been rebuilt multiple times over its 1,000-year history.
  • 12:00 PM: Lunch at a restaurant near the temple.
  • 2:00-5:00 PM: Walk the Guigu Cliff Path (鬼谷栈道), a 1.6km cliffside trail carved into the rock face. The path offers uninterrupted views of the valley and mountains beyond.
  • 7:00 PM: Evening on the mountain. Watch the sunset from a viewpoint. Dinner featuring Hunan cuisine.
3

Summit Exploration

Final day exploring Tianmen Mountain's network of trails and viewpoints.

  • 6:00 AM: Early morning for sunrise views from one of the summit's best viewpoints.
  • 7:00-10:00 AM: Continue exploring the summit's trail network. Visit the Tianmenshan Temple and walk the Cloud Ladder, a dramatic staircase carved into the cliff.
  • 10:30 AM: Return to hotel for breakfast and rest.
  • 2:00-5:00 PM: Final afternoon based on your interests. Options include photography-focused walks, revisiting favorite viewpoints, or simply enjoying the mountain atmosphere.
  • 7:00 PM: Farewell dinner. Your guide shares the geological and cultural history of Tianmen Mountain and its significance in Chinese culture.
